Michael is a leading Industry Executive and Senior Business Leader with extensive domestic and global experience at the most senior levels of premier organizations. As Chief Construction Officer of AvalonBay, Michael is responsible for all construction, capex and redevelopment for all new development projects and all existing AvalonBay Communities. Prior to joining AvalonBay, Michael had senior level positions at AECOM, AECOM/Tishman, Navigant Consulting (now Ankura), Marsh and Bovis Lend Lease (now known as LendLease USA). He is firmly established as a thought leader in enterprise wide risk management, construction site safety, complex problem solving and dispute resolution, team building and innovation in the construction space. Michael has participated in numerous corporate and not for profit boards, and currently is a Trustee of the Board of Directors of the National Building Museum and a member of the ACE Mentor Program Board and Executive Committee. AvalonBay’s Fire Elimination Program has been recognized by the Insurance Risk Management Institute, who gave Michael the Gary Bird Horizon Award for Innovation in Construction Risk Management. Michael also has been recognized by Engineering News Record as a 2019 Top 25 Newsmaker for his leadership in the area of Fire Elimination.
A national builder specializing in multifamily construction has developed a new and innovative approach to solving the problem of destructive fires on wood frame buildings under construction. The firm’s Fire Elimination Program solves the four fundamental issues underlying jobsite fires: the use of open flames, lack of adequate security, ineffective fire detection and, ultimately, expensive and minimally effective fire suppression. Attendees will learn new strategies designed to eliminate the risk of destructive fires on any type of construction project.
