Paul has thirty years of experience in HVAC/R and HVAC/R education. As Technical Training Manager at Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US (METUS), he manages the technical training staff, works with distributors on the design of authorized training centers, and manages the technical instructor staff and course materials for training centers across the country. Prior to joining METUS in 2012, Paul held positions in training and HVAC servicing in the Boston, MA area.

Getting Started with VRF: Best Practices and Common Misconceptions

Developed for professionals who are new to Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) technology, but not necessarily new to HVAC, this presentation explains what contractors need to know to successfully work with VRF systems. The presenter will dispel common myths and misconceptions about VRF systems regarding functionality, performance and installation. In addition, the presenter will provide accurate information that attendees may use to start or improve their company's VRF sales and installation practice.


  1. Identify VRF system components as well as basic best practices for applications and installation.
  2. Explain the similarities and differences between VRF systems and traditional HVAC systems regarding functionality, performance and installation requirements.
  3. Dispel common myths and misconceptions about VRF systems including those related to ACCA sizing guidelines, wiring, piping and maintenance.
  4. Make a case to company leadership and clients describing the advantages and opportunities associated with specifying, applying, and installing VRF systems.
